As a former New Yorker, Jessica Halich started Austin School Expo with a single goal: to make the process of selecting the right school for your child a democratic and accessible process.
With a background in both education and research, Jessica put her training to work when she became a mother, trying to find the best school fit for her children, then navigating the (often confusing) process of securing a spot. Schools frequently don’t have websites equipped with the latest search optimization; as a result, finding them was more than a Google search – it required community, word-of-mouth, and relationships.
Moving back home to Austin, Jessica saw a quickly-growing city, with parents facing the same challenges she did in Manhattan. As the city got larger, school waitlists got longer, and parents needed to start the school-selection process sooner. On top of that, she knew that there was no handbook for parents that outlined educational styles: everyone was learning on the fly, studying up on the best approaches for their kids, and hustling for school spots that were shrinking.
So taking what she learned in New York, Jessica – a passionate community builder – founded Austin School Expo in 2014. By bringing parents into a relationship with schools, and by doing it all under one roof, this labor of love flourished into an incredible resource for Austin families. Today, it is the go-to event for parents committed to finding the best fit for their kids and ensuring them a wonderful school experience that will resonate for years to come.
